Greece day 5 ""Last day on Crete"
We got up around 8:00 am this morning because we had decided the night before that we would just hang around "Old Town" today. We had our breakfast of pastries, fruit, coffee, & tea out on our balcony and then went up to the roof to take a few pics of the flowers and view from up there. For the first time since we got here there was a little tiny rain cloud that came over as we were out there but we just got a few sprinkles and then it cleared up. We then headed to the beach for a few hours and then back to the studio to change and to lunch. We had decided to go back to Firka Castle and explore it a little more. We found a tunnel we didn't see the first time and David followed it all the way down till it came out at the bottom of the old moat. We also climbed up to the very top and found a few bones and some broken pottery. Don't know how old any of it is but it was still interesting. We took a few pics up at the top. There is a beautiful view up there. AFter the castle we called the kids to see how things were going at 7:00 am their time. Luke was not ready for school and had no clean socks so things weren't going very smoothly so we didn't talk long. Maybe they will need to do some laundry???:) After that we headed to the market to finish some shopping. David insisted that I take a pic of one of the tiny cars here, he thinks they are hilarious. I told him not to laugh too hard because that's probably what our car on Santorini looks like. After that we walked to the far side of the harbor and walked all the way around to the lighthouse. There is a building about 1/2 way to the lighthouse that is along the sea wall that has some very interesting history. It's called the St. Nicolas Tower and used to be a church. It was built in 1515, then leveled in 1645 by the Turks and armed w/canons and then later the tower was used as an execution place. After that it was used as a dry dock for wooden ships. Now it is a cafe so David and I got a seat by one of the 2 windows that looks out on the sea and ordered dinner. David got the swordfish and I got, your not going to believe this...octopus. I had to do it for my boys, they would think that's so cool. It actually wasn't too bad! The sun was setting over the water while we ate so we took a few more pics of the light house as we walked back on the sea wall. It was another wonderful day. Tomorrow we must be at the bus station by 5:25 am to catch a ferry to Santorini. Good bye Crete:(
